CONSEQUENCES OF CHILD MARRIAGE - OLADIMEJI HAMEEDAH

                                                MEEDARH's CORNER    PART   I

Child marriage has been a common practice for years now. It is the marrying off of a child less than 18 years of age. The practice began to be questioned in the 20th century. Other terms applied to it is "early marriage" and "child bride".
In 2002, 52 million girls less than 18 years old in the world were married off with 25000 girls less than 18 years were being married off each. Up to 100 million was married off in 2012. In South Asia 48% of women aged 15-24 have been married off before age 18.
In ancient times, it was common for girls to be betrothed at or even before puberty. I can say that this started as a result of discrimination between a female child and a male child. In Nigeria, males are often given the opportunity to choose a spouse while females are sometimes forced to get married to someone their parents or wards want them to.
Although some male children are also betrothed or forced to get married to someone they don't want to but in most cased, it is the female child that falls into this kind of situation.
Forcing one's child into marriage is a case on its own, but how old is this child. Forcing a child less than 18 years old into marriage is illegal in Nigeria, its the same thing as child abuse or even selling a child but yet some parents still do it.
Some reasons why parents force their children into early marriage include poverty, greed, illiteracy and also to strengthened their friendship  with the other family. In most cases, its either greed or poverty.
Some parents don't even care about what happens after this kind of marriage, they don't even think about it before marrying off their children. They don't know the kind of danger they are exposing their child to
Child marriage is a violation of human right and it prevents the child from completing her education. Child marriage also prevents a child from enjoying optimal health, bonding with her age mates and also feel the freedom to choose a heart chosen husband.
Take a look at this scenario where by a child age 12 is married off to a man as old as 40 years old. Probably this man has two other wives, it is obvious that such a child is only brought into the house as an house help. Other wives will see her as a little girl and won't hesitate to make her suffer. Its only in rare cases that she will meet nice wives. Since the husband won't be around at all times, she will have to bear the sufferings. She might be unable to tell her parents due to fear and this might cause emotional distress for her.
Furthermore, such a child hasn't fully developed and so if she gets pregnant, there is probability that she will have complication during pregnancy and while giving birth.
When a child is forced into marriage at an early age, she is being exposed to illness and some diseases such as cervical cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, malaria, death during child birth, premature birth and obstetric fistula(an abnormal passage of urine from the bladder to the virginal).

Since child marriage didnt start today, it might be difficult to stop it but not impossible. Some of the things we can do include,  organizing girls empowerment programs, supporting young people to be agent of change, establishing, implementing rules and laws to fight against child marriage and encouraging girl child education.
Lastly, remember each child is a unique person so don't ruin that special gene in her by ending her education. Education helps a lot in a child's life. Train your child in the proper way and you will enjoy it in the future. A child is a precious gem, so hold on to it tight.

                              IKOKORE

 Ingredients:::

• Beef
• Sharki
• dry fish (Shawa)
• 2 palm oil
• Fresh pepper (shombo "chili" + Ata rodo "Red scotch bonnet pepper") - ground
• crayfish
• seasoning cubes
• Salt to taste

Directions:::

Step 1: Slice and peel the skin off the water yam

Step 2: Wash the yams and cut into chunks. With a grater, grate the yam slices. You'd notice the drawy texture of the grated water yam - set this aside

Step 3: In a medium sized pot, place the washed beef and sharki. Season with salt to taste and crushed seasoning cubes, add just enough water to cover the meat in the pot and cook for about 20 minutes till tender. Break and remove the bones from the fish and wash. Add into the meat pot and leave to cook for about 5 minutes. Turn off the burner and transfer the cooked meat and fish from the pot into a separate bowl leaving the stock.

Step 4: Add some more water to the stock, palm oil, ground pepper puree, check for salt and add more if necessary. Place the pot back on the burner and leave till the liquid in the pot starts to boil.

Step 5: Add some salt to taste and also crushed seasoning to the grated water yam. This is to ensure it has some taste since it's going to be in lumps. Once the stock liquid starts to boil, start adding scoops of the water yam paste into the liquid. You can use the hollow of your washed hand for this or a spoon. Once you drop the water yam paste into the pot, it'd float to the top. cover and allow to cook for 10 minutes. Sprinkle the crayfish over it. Don't stir the ikokore in the pot else it'd scatter. Just leave it to cook.

Step 6: Now add the meat and fish removed earlier and leave to simmer for about 5 minutes more. Serve!.

THE DANGERS IN USING MOBILE PHONES - HAMEEDAH OLADIMEJI

Miss Oladimeji Hameedah, a mass communication student, UNILORIN

Mobile phones are handheld devices used in receiving calls, make calls, send text messages and thanks to recent inventions, they are now used for browsing.
As at February 2014, over 167 million Nigerians use mobile phones and as at 2007 over 1 billion people use them all over the world. Nowadays its very difficult to find someone without even a touch light phone. And we see this as "development", to the extent that it has become fashion and everyone wants to use the latest phone in town.
Even though phones have lot of advantage, it also has its disadvantages just like so many good things. And too much of everything is bad, this applies to the use of mobile phones too. Excessive use of mobile phone can take a toll on your health.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), mobile phones use transmitting radio waves through a series of base stations where radio frequency waves are electromagnetic fields that cannot break chemical bonds or cause ionization in the human body.
Some of us sleep and wake up with our phones. They are the last things we see before going to bed at night and the first thing we see immediately we wake up in the morning.
Have you ever wondered why you wake up in the morning to find out that the phone you left under your bed is hot. Sleeping with your phones under your pillow or close to your bed is very dangerous because when you sleep your phone pump out electromagnetic radiation when they are on.
Other things include setting your bed and pillow on fire, this can affect your room too and probably the house, it can also keep you awake throughout the night which can make you grumpy throughout the day.

Since we can't do without these mobile device we have to look for solution to the problems. To start with, we can start using hands free devices instead of using receiving calls directly. Also, we can make less calls and start using text messages more.
Furthermore, charging while using your phone is very dangerous. Some people even go to the extent of receiving calls while charging, this could lead to burning your hands and in some cases death.
Also children less than 10 years old shouldn't be allowed to use phones frequently  because their skulls and scalps are thinner than adults.
This new age has also made youths so addicted to their phones that they can't do without checking their phones for messages for even a minute.
Driving while using your phone is also a problem which can lead to accident resulting into driver, commuters and passengers death.
In conclusion, life is the greatest gift bestowed on all humans. Life is precious, beautiful and meant to be enjoyed while it lasts. Use your phones wisely and spread the words. Mobile phones are as well a blessing and at the same time a curse.

STRAIGHT FROM THE INK OF A POET IV.- MUBARAK OLADOSU

DATES WITH FATES

From the hands of fates,

Gifts I hate.

With torrents of tears

That won’t abate,

I hastened to dream.

It’s time to be late:

I gazed at the skies

Wondering where lies the gate.

Now my tongue

Touches new taste

And I witness my testament.

Living fresh a date.
